Privacy Policy

1. Summary
What Phone (whatphone.io) is a free web tool that tells you which phone you are using and lists its technical specs. Detection runs entirely in your browser. We do not receive, upload, sell or share the device details the tool shows you.
2. What stays on your device
When you open the site, the tool reads values that your browser makes available to every web page, such as:
- Your user agent string, which is used to guess the brand, model and operating system.
- Screen resolution, pixel ratio, colour depth and refresh rate.
- Logical CPU core count and approximate device memory.
- The GPU renderer and vendor string.
- Battery level and charging state, where your browser supports it.
- Network connection type, language and time zone.
These values are processed locally and displayed to you. They are not transmitted to our servers or stored in a database. The Copy specs, Share and Download JSON buttons only act when you press them, and only send data to the place you choose.
3. What we do receive
Like every website, our hosting provider automatically records standard technical logs when a page is requested:
- IP address
- Browser and operating system (user agent string)
- The page requested and the referring page
- Date and time of the request
These logs are used only to deliver the site, keep it secure, diagnose faults and prevent abuse. We do not use them to build profiles of individual visitors.
4. Storage in your browser
What Phone uses your browser’s localStorage to remember a few preferences on your own device:
- Any model you enter with the manual picker, so it survives a page reload.
- Your chosen interface language.
- Any other display preference the site offers.
This information never leaves your device and we cannot read it. You can remove it at any time with the Reset to auto-detect button or by clearing site data in your browser settings.
5. Cookies
What Phone does not set advertising cookies and does not run third-party ad networks, cross-site trackers or advertising fingerprinting. If this ever changes, this policy will be updated before the change goes live.
6. Third-party services
- Google Fonts — fonts are loaded from Google’s servers. That request reveals your IP address and user agent to Google. See Google’s privacy policy for details. You can block it in your browser or with an extension if you prefer.
- Hosting and CDN provider — serves the pages and keeps the technical logs described in section 3.
- Your browser’s share sheet — the Share button uses the built-in Web Share API. We never see which app you send your specs to.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it with data brokers.
7. Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR or CCPA), you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to the processing of your personal data, and to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Because detection data never reaches us, the practical way to erase everything the site knows about you is to clear this site’s data in your browser. For anything else — including the server logs described above — write to hello@whatphone.io and we will respond within the time required by law.
8. Data retention
Server logs are kept only as long as needed for security and troubleshooting, then rotated and deleted. We do not maintain a database of visitors or their devices.
9. Children
What Phone is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Security
The site is served over HTTPS. The strongest protection here is architectural: the sensitive part — your device profile — never leaves your browser, so there is nothing on our side to breach.
11. International transfers
Our hosting provider and Google Fonts may process data in countries other than yours, including the United States. Where required, those providers rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the site evolves. The date at the top of the page always shows the current version. Material changes will be flagged on the site itself.
