About What Phone
A small, independent tool with one job: tell you what phone you are holding — without asking for anything in return.
Built and maintained by Waqas Bukhari, Founder & Developer
1. Why we built it
Every day, millions of people search “what phone do I have?” — when buying a case, selling a device, contacting support, or simply satisfying curiosity. Most of the results are bloated pages full of ads, app install prompts, or vague answers that never actually name the phone.
What Phone exists to fix that. Open the page on your phone, and your brand, model, operating system and full specs appear in about a second. No account. No download. No upload. It is the tool we wanted to exist.
The project is independent and self-funded. It is not backed by a manufacturer, a carrier, or an ad network, which means we are free to give you a straight answer.
2. How it works
Detection happens entirely in your browser. When you open the page, the tool reads the details that your browser and operating system already make available to every web page — things like your user agent string, screen resolution, CPU core count, GPU renderer, and battery state.
Those values are matched against a built-in database of phone models using a set of rules and heuristics. The result is shown to you on the page. Nothing is sent to our servers, and nothing is stored outside your own device.
Privacy is architectural, not a promise. Because detection runs locally, there is nothing on our side to breach, sell, or leak. See our Privacy Policy for the full picture.
3. Our principles
Private by default
Your device profile belongs to you. We do not upload it, log it, or build profiles around it.
Free to use
The core tool is free and always will be. No paywalls, no forced sign-ups, no hidden fees.
No dark patterns
No misleading buttons, no fake scan animations that never finish, no app-install tricks. What you see is what you get.
Honest about limits
Some browsers hide the model, and iPhones often resolve to a group rather than an exact model. We tell you that plainly instead of pretending otherwise — see our Disclaimer.
Fast and lightweight
The page is designed to load quickly on modest devices and slow connections. No heavy frameworks, no unnecessary trackers.
4. Under the hood
What Phone is built with plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript. It has no advertising SDKs, no third-party analytics, and no cross-site trackers. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, and everything else is served directly from our own infrastructure.
The tool supports modern mobile browsers on Android and iOS, as well as desktop browsers. The manual model picker exists for cases where the browser hides the model or reports it incorrectly.
5. Who is behind it
What Phone is designed, built and maintained by Waqas Bukhari, an independent developer. The project started as a small personal tool and grew into a public site after it became clear how many people were looking for a simple, honest answer to the same question.
Feedback, bug reports and feature suggestions are always welcome — and genuinely shape what gets built next.
6. What’s next
We are gradually improving detection coverage for newer and less common devices, adding clearer explanations where results are ambiguous, and expanding the manual picker. If you have an idea that would make the tool more useful to you, let us know.
